In-practice teaching

The amount of in-practice teaching required depends on your stage of training and includes both formal and informal teaching requirements. Informal teaching is also known as opportunistic, ad hoc or corridor teaching and encompasses the supervisor providing you mentorship and support in your clinical work.

GPT1

For full time registrars* in their first GP term, supervisors are required to provide a minimum of three hours teaching per week.

Specifically, for RACGP training this comprises:

  • one hour structured formal teaching time
  • two hours of one-on-one case discussion and mentoring (informal teaching).

GPT2

For full time registrars* in their second GP term, supervisors are required to provide a minimum three hours teaching per fortnight.

Specifically, for RACGP training this comprises:

  • one hour structured formal teaching time (this could be 30 minutes per week or 1 hour per fortnight)
  • one hour a week of one-on-one case discussion and mentoring (informal teaching).

GPT3

There is no formal teaching requirement for registrars in their third and subsequent GP terms, however as registrars are still in training and supervisors will still provide one-on-one case discussion and mentoring.

* The requirement for part-time registrars is 50% of the above.
